Apprenticeships and traineeships

Apprenticeships and traineeships play an important role in providing skilled workers to Queensland industry and providing an employment and training pathway for Queensland workers.

In 2008-2009 the State Government allocated $186.5 million to develop the skills of apprentices and trainees demonstrating a commitment to tackle skill shortages head on.

Queensland continues to lead all other states and territories in the increase in completions and also continues to make strong growth in the take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships. About 63,400 new apprentices and trainees commenced in the 12 months to 31 March 2008, an increase of 7.9 per cent on the previous year.

In addition, more than 50 000 young people have experienced the benefits of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships since the programs first started in Queensland more than 10 years ago. The Queensland Government recognises the benefits of these programs for our young people and industry and is aiming to maximise the number of school-based apprentices and trainees in Queensland in 2009.
